Council member Steve Kornell wants city council to vote on a resolution for the city's lobbyists to go to Tallahassee to fight for more stringent gun laws.
In the wake of the horrific shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn. many organizations, government officials and businesses are rethinking and challenging America’s policy on gun control. Local Rep. Kathy Castor is calling for a limit on high-capacity magazines and assault weapons; former Florida Gov. Charlie Crist said there needs tougher background checks and even Walmart and Dick’s Sporting Goods are curtailing their sales of assault weapons. Continuing every day through Dec. 21, a Pinellas County Sheriff's Office deputy will be assigned to provide a patrol detail at each of the elementary schools in the Sheriff's Office jurisdiction. The increased security comes off the news of the tragic shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn. At that school 27 people were shot to death. According to the Sheriff's Office, a deputy will be assigned to each school during the morning drop-off times. In addition, extra patrols will be available throughout the day in the area surrounding the schools. Last Friday’s massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., has prompted one local lawmaker to take up the charge to push Congress to pass two proposed gun control acts. U.S. Rep. Kathy Castor, D-Tampa, says it’s time for Congress to ban assault weapons and high-capacity magazines along with them. She’s also urging Congress to close a loophole that allows the immediate sale of weapons at gun shows. “There is no reason people need access to assault weapons and high-capacity magazines,” Castor said in a statement posted on her website. “Commonsense regulation is appropriate. I forgot to address his second point about straw purchases.
