Poll: 67% of Residents Oppose 'Lens', 68% Closing Pier

StPetePolls released the results of its latest poll late Wednesday night ahead of Thursday's city council vote on the next phase of funding for the "Lens".

Results from a new survey from StPetePolls show overwhelming opposition to the city moving forward with the "Lens" pier design and to closing the St. Petersburg Pier before a public vote.  The release of the poll comes just hours before the St. Petersburg City Council votes on $1.54 million for funding the next phase of the "Lens" project Thursday morning.  According to results released Wednesday at 11 p.m., 67.2 percent of respondents said they would vote 'yes' to terminate the "Lens" pier project contract if a public referendum were held today. Only 27.8 percent said they supported the "Lens", with 5 percent undecided.  Around 68 percent of respondents said the city should keep the existing inverted pyramid open until a vote on the …

Poll: St. Pete Mayor, Council Approval Ratings Drop

Results from a new phone survey, which was released last week, also said approval ratings for red light cameras rebounded slightly.

Approval ratings for St. Petersburg Mayor Bill Foster came in at 49.1 percent in StPetePolls survey from last week. That's down from 54.3 percent in December. According to the unscientific poll, the mayor's highest approval rating came in at 61.4 percent in May 2012. "The Mayor and City Council both saw their approval ratings drop to their lowest levels ever in our polling," according to StPetePolls General Survey Results for February 2013. St. Petersburg City Council received an approval rating of 38.3 percent compared to 44.5 in December. Nearly 70 percent of the 1,729 respondents said a candidate's position on the Pier will be an important factor in who they vote for. When asked, "Do you think the city should put the question of whether…

Poll: St. Pete Supports Sign Spinners, Opposes Rays Stadium

The poll also showed increased support for City Council and the Mayor. What the city does not support is financing a new Rays Stadium.

After its general election success, StPetePolls has released another of its local polls.  According to results of its November survey, Mayor Bill Foster, City Council, the creation of a foreclosure registry and sign spinners all received support.  The telephone survey of 1,424 registered voters within St Petersburg was conducted on Nov. 12.  Foster has a 55 percent approval rating, which is his highest since June. Council's approval rating edged above 50 percent for the first time since July.  Items that did not garner public support include red light cameras, and public financing for a new Rays stadium.  Opposition to a new Rays stadium is severe in the new poll. Nearly 70 percent of respondents said they did not want the city taking out …

No Pier Over 'Lens'? Worst Idea in Tampa Bay?

A survery of St. Petersburg residents showed they'd rather have nothing than the $50 million 'Lens' icon in Tampa Bay.

StPetePolls has released its results from its September poll and survey says St. Petersburg residents would rather have no pier at all than have the "Lens" 51.7 percent to 48.3 percent.  According to readers of Creative Loafing, the feeling is mutual. In its annual "Best of the Bay" awards, Michael Maltzan Architecture's "Lens" pier design received the "worst idea of Tampa Bay" award.  "The Lens" has greater support among younger poll respondents. According to results from StPetePolls, more than 50 percent of those between 18 and 49 years of age would rather build the "Lens". However, those 50 and older would rather build no pier at all.  The alternative weekly also had Mayor Bill Foster as runner-up to "worst local politician." That award…

I showed a friend of mine visiting from out of town a picture of The Lens. His comment was where do we think we are, Dubai ? We then went out to the Pier and had a wonderful lunch at Cha Cha Coconuts. The food, the breeze, the entertainment and the view were great. I go regularly to the Columbia. I'm glad the Gonzmarts' plan to keep a Columbia restaurant downtown but half the fun of going there …   more ›

In the race for the Republican nomination for U.S. Senate, Mack leads the other candidates with 61.4 percent of the vote. In July, StPetePolls had the race at Gualtieri 43.3 percent to Rice's 39.9 percent with 17 percent undecided.  In the Republican primary for State Senator District 22, Brandes is leading Jim Frishe 64.1 percent to 35.9 percent. Jeff Brandes is the worst man for the job. His votes make life harder for women, children and working people. He is not representing the middle class or the poor, only the top 1% and corporations. Anyone but Brandes. And by the way, Jim Jackson is an excellent choice for school board. He wants to get disruptive kids out of the classroom so teachers can teach and other students can learn. He wants…   more ›

City Council's Approval Rating Tanks After Pier Vote

StPetePolls released results of its new survey, which touches on the St. Pete Pier, Cit Council, Mayor Bil Foster and Red Light Cameras.

According to the local polling outfit, StPetePolls, City Council's approval rating took a dive this month after nearly a year of steady ratings.  The survey, taken by 2,422 registered city voters on Aug. 4, shows Council's approval rating at 42.7 percent. Prior to that rating, Council never had an approval rating lower than 49 percent.  Just days before the survey, council voted 6-2 to deny the public the opportunity to vote on the future of the St. Petersburg Pier. More than 23,000 petitions were signed to try and force a vote on the pier.  StPetePolls also asked respondents, if the costs were the same, would you rather renovate the inverted pyramid pier or build the new Lens pier. By more than two-thirds, 68 percent, the public said it …

A sensible analysis by Mr Smith. It's time for Mr Rice to take his very comfy pension and, well, retire. Sheriff Gualtieri has done a fine job, and merits support for another term.   more ›
