Chief of Police Chuck Harmon to Retire

With the St. Petersburg Police Department since 1982, Harmon will retire on Jan. 6, 2014.

St. Petersburg Chief of Police Charles "Chuck" Harmon announced Wednesday that he is retiring next year, "barring any unforeseen circumstance." 

Harmon's last day with the department will be Jan. 6, 2014. 

According to police spokesman Bill Proffitt, Harmon joined the St. Petersburg Police Department in 1982. 

Starting as sworn police officer, Harmon rose through the ranks of the department filling multiple roles including: a field training officer, sergeant, traffic section commander, lieutenant, major and assistant chief.

Harmon, 53, was promoted to chief on Dec. 18, 2011. 

After 31 years of service with the St. Petersburg Police Department, Harmon said he is looking forward to spending more time with his wife, Lori, and his children.
